Evaluation of Four-dimensional (4D) Computed Tomography (CT) Pulmonary Ventilation Imaging by Comparison with Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) Scans for a Lung Cancer Patient
نویسندگان
چکیده
The goal of this study was to present a method for physiologic validation and show results for a comparison of the 4D-CT ventilation and SPECT ventilation or perfusion. A 4D-CT and a SPECT ventilation/perfusion (V/Q) (VSPECT and QSPECT) scans were acquired for a lung cancer patient. Two 4D-CT ventilation images were created using two metrics: Hounsfield unit (HU)-change (V4D-CT) and Jacobian determinant (V4D-CT), and were compared with SPECT. The 4D-CT ventilation images were of higher resolution than SPECT. Areas of visual agreement and disagreement were identified. VSPECT suffered from central airway depositions. Quantitatively, the correlation coefficients with VSPECT (QSPECT) were 0.030 (0.357) for V4D-CT, and 0.184 (0.479) for V4D-CT. The physiologic accuracy of 4D-CT ventilation imaging has been evaluated on a human subject. The weak correlations with SPECT could be due to limitations of the 4D-CT and/or SPECT techniques. Further investigation and patient studies are needed.

Utilization of an optimum low-pass filter during filtered back-projection in the reconstruction of single photon emission computed tomography images of small structures
Introduction:Low-pass filters eliminate noise, and accordingly improve the quality of filtered back-projection (FBP) in the reconstruction of single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) images. This study aimed at selection of an optimum low-pass filter for FBP reconstruction of SPECT images of small structures. Material and Methods:Sp...
متن کاملSPECT-CT fusion in the diagnosis of hyperparathyroidism
Objective(s): In this study, we aimed to analyze the relationship between the diagnostic ability of fused single photon emission computed tomography/computed tomography (SPECT/CT) images in localization of parathyroid lesions and the size of adenomas or hyperplastic glands. Methods: Five patients with primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) and 4 patients with secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT) we...
متن کاملT4DT: Processing 4D CT scans of the Lungs
A proposal submitted to 2005 GC4R program for Collaborative Advances in Biomedical Computing (C-ABC) Project Summary: We propose to develop information technology for processing time-varying CT scans (4D CT) of the lungs. In particular, we propose to develop tools for estimating the ventilation (air flow) and perfusion (blood flow) from 4D CT and apply these tools to quantitatively assess the e...
متن کاملThe incorporation of SPECT functional lung imaging into inverse radiotherapy planning for non-small cell lung cancer.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) often have inhomogeneous lung perfusion. Radiotherapy planning computed tomography (CT) scans have been accurately co-registered with lung perfusion single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) scans to design radiotherapy treatments which limit dose to healthy 'perfused' lung. PATIENTS AND METHODS Patients with loc...

In this series a pictorial quiz pertaining to identification of normal anatomical structures and landmarks at a given level on the computed tomography (CT) is presented. An image depicting normal anatomy is followed by a series of images showing different pathologies. Readers are expected to identify and appreciate variation and changes in the normal anatomy in presence of a given pathology. Th...
